In today’s episode, I’m sitting down with Catherine Fowler Sample and we’re talking about how writing and producing the award-winning documentary The Dating Project inspired her to write an entire book on the importance of connection around a shared meal when it comes to combating the loneliness that so many of us are all too familiar with in today’s world - where we’re connected to so many people via Instagram, but we struggle to connect with the people who live in our homes or are the closest to us.

Joseph and I sat down a few weeks ago for our 2021 dream date, where we share about our hopes and dreams for the upcoming year and review what went well and what didn’t go well in 2020 and both of us mentioned that something we really missed was hosting friends on a more regular basis - which got the boot thanks to COVID. But now that we’re God-willing seeing an end to the COVID tunnel, even if it’s still months away, the idea of hosting people again is something that is both exciting and a little intimidating. I think I’m a little rusty!

If you’re desiring human connection but are nervous to send out that invite to your friends for a shared dinner together because you’re worried about what you’ll cook, who you’ll invite, and what you’ll talk about, sister, this letter is for you.

Topics we talked about in this episode:

  • How creating the award winning documentary The Dating Project inspired the creation of Catherine’s brand new book, “Gather Together”

  • How can we grow in our ability to start (and maintain!) good conversation with our friends and family, especially around the table

  • Why Saint Martha is the model for hospitality

  • Balancing out intentionality with flexibility when it comes to hosting

  • Catherine’s dream dinner

  • Practical tips on pivoting from the live events many of us realize we took for granted

  • How Our Lady’s queenship is lived out through her service to others, and what that means for us as we live out the feminine genius
